The Power of a Private Guide on Safari

Until recently, I hadn’t travelled with a private guide and to be honest, I wasn’t sure it would make that much of a difference, but after nine days exploring Botswana with an exceptional private guide, I can say with absolute certainty: it changes everything.

So what exactly does a private guide do?

When your journey involves multiple safari destinations, border crossings and complex logistics, your private guide becomes your quiet hero behind the scenes. They coordinate everything – transfers, check-ins, flights and border formalities -ensuring your travel experience is seamless from start to finish. You never need to wonder who’s meeting us next or what time we’re leaving tomorrow, it’s all handled with calm precision.

Experts in their field: Specialists, not Generalists

To put it simply, a private guide is to a safari what a specialist is to medicine. Camp guides are wonderful – knowledgeable, passionate and deeply connected to their environment – but private guides operate on another level entirely. They are field experts, trackers and storytellers whose life’s work is understanding nature in its most intricate detail.

They listen to every birdcall, pause instinctively at the sound of rustling leaves and notice the smallest tracks that often lead to the most extraordinary sightings. For travellers with a particular interest (be it photography, birds, big cats or botany), a private guide brings that world vividly to life.

Connecting the dots

Unlike lodge-based guides who know one area intimately, private guides travel with you across reserves, countries and ecosystems. They remember what you’ve seen before, tailor each game drive to build on those experiences and weave a continuous story of Africa’s wilderness as it unfolds across landscapes. With a private guide, it’s not just a series of game drives anymore, it’s a journey with context, rhythm and meaning.

What does it cost?

Hiring a private guide isn’t as extravagant as it might sound. The cost typically includes:

  • Their daily guiding rate (which varies by country, duration, and level of expertise)
  • Their accommodation at each lodge (most lodges have a guide/pilot room available)
  • Logistics (such as internal flights or transfers between camps)
  • And a gratuity at the end of the trip

Depending on your itinerary and budget, the added cost is often far outweighed by the value they bring in knowledge, comfort and the depth of your safari experience.

A richer, more connected safari

A private guide ensures that no moment is wasted, no detail overlooked and no story untold. For me, it turned a wonderful safari experience into a deeply personal and transformative one.

Technology has always played a role in how we experience travel. Today, however, artificial intelligence is beginning to influence not just how safari travel is marketed, but how it is understood and that shift deserves careful attention. AI-generated photography and videography can now produce flawless wildlife encounters: perfectly timed hunts,

The Feeling of Safari

Growing up, our family holidays were simple and wholesome. We’d pack into a single rondavel in a national park—no partitions, no fuss—running through sprinklers for hours between climbing trees. Other times, we hiked the gravel paths of the Drakensberg making up songs as we went along. Learning about tracks at

The Best Time to Combine Cape Town and a Southern Africa Safari

I’ve always loved the contrast of a journey that balances two very different worlds: the crisp, coastal beauty of Cape Town and the raw, untamed magic of a Southern African safari. But planning this combination isn’t just about choosing destinations – it’s about timing. Many travellers assume that peak safari
